The second of my ‘easy’ walking days was somewhat spoiled by the realisation that my phone charger wasn’t working. And previous experience has shown that phone chargers can be hard to find. A phone is absolutely vital because it accesses an interactive map of the trail, and actual signage is not always reliable, in fact is often missing.
Anyway, first things first, I laced up my boots differently which has helped the toe problem. The rest of my aches are simply the body getting used to the routine - yesterday’s hip pain is today’s knee pain… in a couple more days everything should be worked out.
I’m now nearing the Somme river and the landscape is starting to roll. Here are some pretty anemones in a woods.
I actually only took two photos today - not much of note en route, and trying to save the bit of battery juice left. This was interesting - probably an old mill, but I wondered why the river was contained by cement banks.
Doing a bit of reading at night, this is a new canal being built right now, the Seine Nord Europe canal. Amazing - I thought the era of canals was well and truly over! It is a bit hard to understand all the why and wherefore from web sites, but I gather that the point is to link up with the port of Dunkirk and move all sorts of goods into this region by water. Maybe I’ll find out more tomorrow.
Again today I was saddened by how lacking the villages are in anything that could pull people together - no cafés, no shops, NOT EVEN A BENCH. Walking in to Péronne though, there was a big Leclerc store, the French equivalent of Walmart. Got a new charger set-up there and sat people-watching in the coffee area for quite a long while. Thankfully it wasn’t a McDonalds!
Glad to hear that you found a bew charger, Celia. It is still winter here, but some melting is happening.
