A short train ride, and here I am in another northern Italian town, Bologna. I am very close to the path I walked last fall, and there is somewhat of a feeling of familiarity. Back to the tall towers! I liked the contrast here.
Bologna is about three times the size of Ferrara. It would be paradise for a well-to-do shopper - lots of lovely clothes stores, jewellery stores, bookstores…. It is a city of arcades. First a building feature of the Middle Ages, allowing houses to expand over the streets and providing shelter for artisans working their trades on the street, construction of arcades became legislated in the city building codes in 1288. The whole of old Bologna, including streets of 19th and 20th century buildings, is characterized by constant arcades.
And here, for a change, are the new Bologna municipal buildings.
Bologna is a university town, full of young students. I forgot yesterday to mention that it was university graduation day in Ferrara. Graduates wear crowns of leaves, the girls with flowers and the boys with ribbons. The girls tended to be with family getting lots of photos taken. The guys tended to be out later in the day with friends, beverages in hand. In both cases, groups kept bursting into song. A happy day!
