Today we have had a complete change of plans. Sore knees and somewhat repetitious hills and hilltop towns have led us to abandon the Via Francigena and take the train into Naples.
Before this decisive step, however, we had a lovely morning visiting the Abbey again and its various dependencies .
| Naples has surprised us. Neither of us was expecting much; all we had heard were alarming stories about awful traffic and clever pickpockets. But this evening the streets were full of enticing shops, a few quick looks in churches revealed all sorts of beautiful and/or interesting things, and the palazzo entrances are straight out of stage sets for Mozart’s « Don Giovanni ». |
Completely by chance we found Ambassador 21, a group from Belarus in the industrial style (fusion of rock, electronic, punk) playing in a courtyard and stood and moved with a small crowd until our ears felt like cotton candy. Wandering on we came to five musicians and singers based in Naples playing really good music mainly from Mexico. A university student crowd packed the smallish bar, many of whom could dance incredibly well. Way livelier than those small hill top towns!
