Our first day walking, and a lovely one despite rain off and on. For most of the day we were on the Via Appia Antica, the Roman road that ran to Brindisi for trade to the Orient and quick movement of soldiers to defend the Empire. All along the road are tombs of Roman nobility, and we talked to a film crew making a documentary about Spartacus. He led a slave revolt that was successful until it wasn’t. The Romans crucified over 6,000 of the slaves who had revolted with Spartacus - the Via Appia was lined for miles with the crosses.
Tonight we are at Castel Gandolpho, a small town where the Pope has a summer residence. We have an apartment with a balcony overlooking the lake. We’ll make our own supper of omelette with chickpeas, but we picked up a wood-fired focaccia - absolute perfection - to have with it.
First photo shows the walls of Rome. Then the Via Appia, with Roman pavement and a 1st c tomb, carvings from tombs, the view from our balcony, and a fast-disappearing focaccia.
